“I miss her everyday. And everyday I’m reminded of the choices I did and did not make the few precious seconds before she was executed. She chose to sacrifice herself, my Camille, to save a community. What I did not realize at the time, was my inability to live with the consequences of that choice. She was my anchor to humanity. When she died, so did the connection I had with the world around me.
Traveling up the Big River, I did unthinkable things. The lives of those in Delta City were paid for with the blood of dozens of innocents. As I made my way back up to Rivertown, with the ultimate goal of finding the doc’, I murdered and raped indiscriminately. All because I couldn’t have Camille.
When I found this kid though. Things changed. I was on the edge already. When suicide becomes something you consider, not because you’re sad or depressed, but because you are curious what it would be like to see your own guts strewn across the ground, you are on the very edge of life and death. One sees things most vividly on that edge. That is why Camille called the plan off, she knew what the consequences for her city would be if I took the shot and stopped the execution.
Meeting that group was more than just coincidence. It was a message, maybe from my old friend the Voice of the Delta. But that message was clear, ‘Have faith yet, in your salvation.” And so I did, and so Kid came along.”
